Importing a mesh from ICEM

Hello I am facing a great problem in generating a mesh from STAR CCM+. I want to do it now in ICEM. How to transfer my model from STAR DESIGN to ICEM and then mesh from ICEM to STAR CCM+ for analysis. Hope to get a quick responce Regards Waseem

I guess you might be able to export an iges then read it in but why on earth would you want to use icem to do your meshing anyway???

A good question.... I am trying to mesh my rectangular U bend in STAR Design and than in STAR CCM+. As I was going for a fine meshing to generate a good number of mesh, my Machine is getting out of memory.I got a better system, but still its taking a hell of time.BTW, the mesh was unstructured. Now with structured meshing I think I can get better results. This structured meshing can be done in ICEM. Regards Waseem

Yeah I did that. But its not working. The geomatry is a simple one. It could produce a mesh with relative size 1% with base size 0.075m. Below that it is not working. Please if you have some idea? Waseem

you are meshing poly or tetra for your unstructured mesh? poly mesh requires a great amount of memory, it's better to try a structured trimmed meshing process to save memory if you don't have it...tetra meshing it's the less memory consuming but you need to generate a great amount of tetra in respect to poly or trimmed hexa, so there's a trade-off...

Yeah I have tried tetra now and its producing good number of cells. SO should I go for tetra stuctured meshing?? Is there any tutorial for that??? BTW, thanks alot for the help.

I was previously using unstructured poly mesh. I want to calculate heat transfer parameters....

Well,
tetra mesh it the one with least precision compared with trimmed hexa or poly...so I suppose you just don't want to use it unless you're forced by memory constraints... Try do create a trimmed mesh with the trimmer and see if you can get your mesh, also try to increase a little the dimension of your cell if you have problem, and see what is the limit of your machine in the meshing process. (with a trimmed hexa mesh you can get the same flux "precision" of a tetra mesh but in this situation you'll have a trimmed hexa mesh with less cell than a tetra) Pleased to help |

you are really very supportive. Thanks Well with trimmed meshing the model should be single region, but my model is 3 regioned.So, I have now decided to go with ICEM. I have transfered the geometry in ICEM. Now trying to mesh it with structured mesh. Hope it work. After meshing is it possible to import the mesh in CCM??

I'm sorry I don't know ICEM so I can't support you with that code...but try to look at the format of the file you can export from ICEM: see if it matches some format under File->Import in Star-CCM+. With the simple "import" you can import volume mesh in CCM+.
But another thing: you can realize mesh of different region in Star-CCM+ even if you use the trimmer. You simply need to use a "mesh continuum" for every region you have, and then you can "connect" the regions by creating interfaces. You'll have to create interfaces using the boundaries that divides your different regions... Try to look at the help of CCM+ if unsure Pleased to help you Bye, Andrea |

Why dont you use workbench to create your geometry. Open your geometry in ICEM, mesh it, and then you can easily export it to star ccm+. Easy peasy!

You should use workbench if you have that. It is much better software than star-design.
