how to solve axis-symmetry problem in Star-CD

Hi, I am a beginner of Star-CD. I try to compare result of Fluent and Star-CD with particle injection. I know it's very easy to solve axis-symmetry problem in Fluent. I drew a 2-D geometry in Gambit, and define the boundary conditions on each edge such as inlet, outlet, wall, axis. Then start Fluent as an axis-symmetry problem. But in Star-CD, it seems I can't draw a 2-D domain and define the boundary conditions on edges. I know there are lots of experts in this forum, Could somebody give me some idea on how to generate a simple geometry as axis-symmetric? Do I have to draw a 3-D volume with 1 degree? Thanks.
Does anybody has experience on which is better on atomization, Fluent or Star-CD. Thanks. |

The basic training course from adapco would cover your needs as described above.
I cannot speak for Fluent, but Star is good for atomization. Regards |

I would recommend you to go through tutorial 9 "idealised gas turbine cumbustor simulation". You were right with the need to mesh a 3D sector of "1" degree. Star-CD solves everything in 3D.

Thanks for your advices. I read the tutorial 9. Now I have a better understanding of Star-CD. Now I have another question. I would like to save some time on learning how to use Star-CD to generate geometry and mesh. I went through the discussions. Many friends said Star-CD can read gambit mesh file, or import igs file. But none of these worked for me. I tried Gambit, in Star-CD, typed gambit, *.neu, then the Star-CD crashed and quit by itself. I also tried to import *.igs, some times the geometry is distorted or edges disconneted from each other. Please you tell me what should be the right way to import mesh or geometry to Star-CD. The mesh or geometry is generated in windows system and Star-CD in Lunix/Unix system. Does it matter?

I have just begun using the Star package and use CCM+ more, but reguardless, I use .stl files with the exported mesh defined as finely as Pro/E will allow me. This has given me good models.

If you are used to gambit meshing, try to export the mesh in PATRAN or NASTRAN formats. These have worked fine for me. Importing .IGS file into PROSTAR may be useful sometimes, but the right procedure is to import it into PROSURF which can handle CAD cleaning and produce a rather good quality surface mesh, and then pass it to PROAM via its database file.
