Hello StarCD Users,
I have a question: what is the biggest possible number of cells which can be solved in StarCD? 1 milion, 100 milions? Thank you |

I don't know the maximum number, but I am running a problem now that has about 8 million cells on 10 processors. Currently Argonne National Labs is running a model that has 73 million cells but requires 114 processors. Unfortunately, not all of us have access to the government's deep pockets.
As a general rule of thumb, if you are running hex cells, it takes about 45MB for 100K cells to run. However, to mesh the cells, it takes about 100MB per 500k cells. Tom |

Thank you Tom. So theoretically If I had a 2 processor pentiun IV with 2 GB of memory I could think about creating 1.5 - 2 millions of cells, is it correct?

with this hardware it should be possible to create something like 8 millions or even more. but then there is a problem of decomposing it for parallel computing. for such a large case you would have to use 64 bit machine to decompose your case. it could be run on 32 bits but not decomposed.
