Hello,

I must buy a new pc (dual or cluster) for Star-CD. What is better, AMD Athlon MP or Intel Xeon?

There is a recent benchmark?

What your suggestion?

Thank you

Try visiting this site: http://www.spec.org/ If your pockets are deep then you could get the Itanium 2...

Also, CPUs with larger cache memories are supposedly better. Something to do with having to keep track of all those nested loops within CFD codes.

Hi,

There are also some benchmarks availble on the cd-adapco page, using various pieces of hardware.

Hi,

I have worked with both AMD and Intel CPU, but now I only use Computers with Intel P4.

Since what matter in CFD is the bandwidth to the main memory (RAM).

Since P4 can RDRAM which is faster than DDR RAM or SD-RAM the Pentium tend to be faster.

This migth change when the new AMD processor Clawhammer comes around.

Also, the only reason for buying a Itanium is that you can use 64-bit memory addressing. Which means more than 2 Gb per run. Itanium is not particular faster than a top P4 with RDRAM.

A good computer would be P4@3.06 Ghz and lots of RDRAM 1066 Mhz.

Regards

Jens

our cluster runs 14 P4's and about 60 odd gig of ram so its all dependent on what you want to do really. and how much money you have of course.

Hi Joel, can you recommend me any specific software (erm, open-source preferably) for cluster management (esp. fault tolerance)? I tried building a crude cluster using C3 and Ganglia last time but really lacked funding (I wouldn't call two nodes a 'cluster') to go any further.
