I am curious whether STAR CD can handle different types of meshes, such as the ones generated in GAMBIT for example?

Hi Jake,
it should be no problem to export a Gambit mesh in a format, Prostar can handle (e.g. Nastran format) |

Handling a gambit mesh is not a problem. There is no cell shape that Fluent can handle that STAR cannot. In fact, the reverse is not true at all. Star can handle many shapes that Fluent will not accept. There is an undocumented/unsupported command in the Prostar convert module called GAMB which may be able to read the gambit file directly. It may not read everything in a Gambit file, but may help if there is no other common denominator (patran,nastran,...)

The only cell types which STAR can handle that Fluent cannot are SAMM cells.
Is this a bad thing? |

I've already done this. I wrote my own translation program which comprised of about 10 lines of fortran code. I exported the GAMBIT mesh as an ANSYS file and my program read this ANSYS file and wrote out as vertices and cells, as required by PROSTAR.

I just said STAR can handle more shapes than Fluent. For STAR that's a positive thing.

Steve,
I tried the GAMBIT command in v3100A. The Prostar session died when I did this. I know it is unsupported and undocumented, just an FYI. To All, I had problems exporting a GAMBIT mesh as a Patran file. I got around this by writing a GAMBIT neutral file. I then read the neutral file into TGRID. From TGRID I wrote a Patran file which I read into Prostar. Regards, Chinor |

Chinor, Did you try reading the gambit binary file or its neutral file. I believe its the neutral file that prostar should be able to read.
