Default star-cd and Linux

Hi All,

I'm testing since 2 weeks the Linux version of STAR-CD. Since I have not Motif installed, I used the LessTif libraries to run Prostar. My problem is that: - in normal use, STAR behaves quite good, compared with the standard installation we have in a IBM RS6000 43P workstation. When I try to launch the STAR-Gui, anyway, pro-xm try to allocate all available memoty on the system (256 MB of RAM and 512 MB of swap) and then crashes with the message "error in malloc". Because the same run in the IBM machine would take no more than 40 MB of memory, this behaviour is becaused the non-original Motif libraries, or would be a bug of the code? Note that I'm running STAR in a Suse Linux 6.2 system, with kernel 2.2.10 and glib-2.0 (STAR was built using Red hat 5.2) Thanks in advance for the help

Vittorio

hello vittorio,

what do you mean with 'in normal use'? i tried star/linux in the same configuration as you did (lestiff, suse 6.2 on an intelli-station with 512 MB ram). it worked quite well, but there was no chance to start the nav-center - and i think that is what you mean with the star-gui, isn't it? did you talk with cd/adapco about this - i didn't because i had no time left before my holidays. one more question - i normaly also use an ibm rs6000/43p-260 workstation for star - what kind of rs6000/43p do you use and did you directly compare linux and aix?

Hello Peter,

"normal use" means everything you can do whitout the nav-center / Star-Gui. At the moment I had no chance to talk with STAR-CD people (lack of time) but I will do asap. Concerning comparison, I did no comparisons at the moment.mainly because the problems got with STAR/linux My IBM is a 43P 2processors 233Mhz 512 Mb RAM 18 GB Hd

hi vittorio,

i also had no time to talk to cd (holidays), but i will do so, when i'm back in the office. in the meantime a colleage of mine made a direct comparison of pc vs workstation with some pro-star macros, but i don't know the results at the moment (the pc is pentium II only). i'll tell you the results when i get them (5.th jan.). maybe you can tell me yours when you get them.

is there anybody else trying star on pc - we also test it on nt.

peter

p.s.: by the way - i think the reason for the gui problem is a combination of bug and lestiff. the nav-center is not very stable at the moment even on more established plattforms like ibm/aix or sgi/irix. i think even adapco itself is not very happy with stability at the moment.

Have you tried to use a prostar version without dynamic memory allocation using prolinkl. It is a bit more stable (at least on my sgi).

hello joern

i got the linux version only for testing - but i got neither the motif lib nor the absoft compiler. so there´s no way to build a local version, but you are right, normaly this helps. so maybe vittorio can try this.

to my knowledge i have seen star cd to work perfectly for non complex flows in a complete linux environ ment . i think suse has released a new kernel of gui interfaces which has facilitated most of star cds post processor problem solving methods.

please check with star cd 8ce3x version which has a complete note for star performance with linux.
