Hello,

I am trying to simulate a 3D CFD solutions of supersonic flow over spheres to study their shock interactions with each other. To start with a simple case, I created a sphere and box around it. The problem arises when I am trying to populate the inside of the box with structured grid cells. There was a video in YouTube that showed how to populate the box (with an internal face) using unstructured grids but could not find any with a structured one. Can someone please help me with this?

Check out this thread:

Sphere in pointwise

And if you don't want to use the hyperbolic extrusion to create the volume mesh:
  • create a large outer box of 6 structured domains with the same dimensions as those on the sphere
  • create and dimension 6 radial connectors from the nodes on the sphere to the corresponding nodes on the outer box
  • assemble the 6 blocks

Thank you for the reply. I did exactly what you said in the thread. But I ended up with domains rather than a block. I mean the region between the sphere surface and outermost extruded part is empty. But for a 3D simulation, I need that region to be filled with 3D mesh. Is there something I am doing wrong?

You need to assemble the structured blocks from the domains. There will be 6 blocks, and in this case, each made up of 6 domains. Ensure the grid type is set to Structured (toolbar icon), select 6 domains, and click Assemble Block (blue toolbar icon with yellow wrench). Do this 5 more times .

When do I need to perform this step? I mean is it something connected with the 'sphere' thread? I tried to convert the domains into block after projecting them onto a sphere with interior only checked. However, that didn't change the mesh and is similar to earlier one.

Did you solve the problem, this is my grid, I did not use extrusion, that simple to create inner and outer spheres and manually assemble domains and blocks
