Hello,
I created a 3D mesh in Pointwise (17R2) and want to export it to Ansys Fluent. I defined the solver to Ansys fluent and the units to millimeters. There are different volume zones which some are fluids and others are solids. When loaded into Fluent (16 and 17) the cell zone are mixed up (all are solids) and the scale is not right. Even when manually defining the cell zones, the shadows aren’t right. Link to the file Do you know how to solve the problem? |

First, I strongly suggest you update your Pointwise install to the latest version 18.0R4. There have been improvements made to the Ansys Fluent exporter since that version that may help.

I exported your grid using both V18.0R4 and V17.0R2. I grep'ed the cas files for the zone types (command 45) and found no problems. There are both fluid and solid zones in both cas files. > grep "(45" pointwise_6ch_v4_UsingV180R4.cas (45 (2 fluid fliud)()) (45 (3 interior interior-fliud)()) (45 (4 wall unspecified)()) (45 (5 mass-flow-inlet inlet)()) (45 (6 pressure-outlet outlet)()) (45 (7 solid heater)()) (45 (8 interior interior-heater)()) (45 (9 wall unspecified)()) (45 (10 wall heater_face)()) (45 (11 solid high_k)()) (45 (12 interior interior-high_k)()) (45 (13 solid walls)()) (45 (14 interior interior-walls)()) (45 (15 wall unspecified)()) (45 (16 interior interior-fliud-high_k)()) (45 (17 interior interior-heater-high_k)()) (45 (18 interior interior-high_k-walls)()) > grep "(45" pointwise_6ch_v4_UsingV170R2.cas (45 (2 fluid fliud) ()) (45 (3 interior interior-3) ()) (45 (4 wall unspecified-4) ()) (45 (5 mass-flow-inlet inlet-5) ()) (45 (6 pressure-outlet outlet-6) ()) (45 (7 solid heater) ()) (45 (8 interior interior-8) ()) (45 (9 wall unspecified-9) ()) (45 (10 wall heater_face-10) ()) (45 (11 solid high_k) ()) (45 (12 interior interior-12) ()) (45 (13 solid walls) ()) (45 (14 interior interior-14) ()) (45 (15 wall unspecified-15) ()) (45 (16 interior interior-16) ()) (45 (17 interior interior-17) ()) (45 (18 interior interior-18) ()) Pointwise exports the numbers you used to create the grid. No scaling is done at export. Pointwise does not export shadows. You need to create those using Ansys Fluent after the grid is loaded into that application. In summary, Unfortunately, I cannot find a problem in the exported files. I do not know how to "fix" this. I don't think it is broken. |

Thanks for the detailed answer
you are right there are no units in pontwise Maybe when you greped the file you see the volume zones, but do you see them in fluent (under cell zone condition)? Thanks |

I loaded BOTH exported grids into Fluent V18. I am not a Fluent user so my skills are limited to loading files. As far as I can tell, all is okay.
See attached image. |

I cannot send you the files directly.
You will need to contact Pointwise support to request official help with this issue. Let them know about this post and they will be able to help you figure out why your exports are broken. And, if needed, they can send you the CAS files I generated. Good luck! |
