TEXT(1D SOLIDS TRANSPORT IN WATER TITLE DISPLAY The problem considered is the one-dimensional vertical flow of spherical particles by water in a duct. The inlet void fraction is 0.4 and the ratio of the solids mass inflow rate to that of the gas is 0.5. The duct area is 1 m**2 and the height is 1m. The particles are 100 microns in diameter and the density ratio is 2.6. The inlet liquid velocity is taken as twice the particle terminal velocity. The task is to predict the volume fractions and phase velocities throughout the duct. The calculations employ the built-in particle-fluidisation drag model (CFIPD=7.), which uses the Ergun correlation for void fractions less than 0.8 (dense fluidisation), and a modified spherical-particle drag correlation for void fraction greater than 0.8 (dilute fluidisation). The test case provides a test of both dense and dilute suspensions according to the setting of DENSE. In both cases the PHOENICS predictions show excellent agreement with the approximate analytical solutions. ENDDIS

You can run the P203 Library test case, using PHOENICS-VR Version 3.4, as follows...

Start PHOENICS-VR. Click on... File, Load from Libraries, and then you will be prompted to enter the Case number. Then type in P203, and then click on OK. The model is then read in to PHOENICS-VR and plotted on the screen. Then, to run an analysis of the model using the PHOENICS EARTH code, click on Run, then Earth, then OK. When the analysis run has finished, you will be left with a plot of the model on the screen again. Then, to view the results - contours, etc, click on Run, and then pick the VR-Viewer, to view the results as normal.

In versions other than PHOENICS Version 3.4, you follow a similar procedure to the above, where PHOENICS-VR exists. However, for older versions, you may need to use Satellite instead. Even if PHOENICS-VR exists, for some older versions you may need to use Satellite, because some older library test cases may not have been converted to be compatible with the version of PHOENICS-VR that you have.

I tested P203 with PHOENICS-VR Version 3.4, today, on 20th March,2002, and it was read in and analysed successfully.
