Well I use binary and give a precision of 6 digits so I guess it is single precision binary. I know using ASCII everything works fine. Is zipping of ASCII possible? Maybe I should switch there.

@Precision: if my understanding is correct, the precision of the binary format is not affected by writePrecision but determined by how your solver was compiled. If you compiled one with the environment variable WM_PRECISION_OPTION=SP the binary files will be written in single precision, while with WM_PRECISION_OPTION=DP the binary files will be in double precision. Which is your setting (echo $WM_PRECISION_OPTION)? If it is SP, I'm afraid the reader does not support single precision binary format yet, although it is in my to-do list.

@Zipping: the reader does support ascii-compressed format (writeCompression compressed; compressed by gzip).

Thanks Takuya for all your help.

I will consider switching to ASCII. If you are interested I can send you my dambreakfine Case so you can try runing it in your environment.

Then if you can pack the case within around 7 MBytes (i.e. < 10 MB MIME-encoded), can you send it to me please? The address is in my profile.

Hi BastiL,
Thanks for the case. However unfortunately, somehow the problem never reproduces, at least on OS X and Ubuntu 8.04 64bit where I have tested so far. I keep on testing on other platforms, but I have to say the chance the problem being reproduced is slim.

Hi,

I posted a Windows 32bit binary package of ParaView 3.4.0 with the parallel reader (which I have been asked several times) to my SF project. The link can be followed from the Downloads section of the Wiki page.

Another difference from the package available from Kitware, apart from the inclusion of the reader, is that my package was compiled with MPICH2 1.0.8. The package contains minimal set of MPICH2-DLLs and executables so that one can easily play with the parallel feature of ParaView and the reader. However, I recommend you install and use the original MPICH2 1.0.8 package from the Argonne site if you run MPICH2 for the first time on your computer, because it will ask you credential information when run for the first time.

Please let me know if you find any problems.

Hi Takuya

Greetings.

Thanks for the new reader. I followed the instructions and was partially successful to compile the paraview with the serial and the parallel reader. Why partially, because I ended with the same error :

jaswi@lstma138:~> paraview
ERROR: In /home/jaswi/Sources/ParaView3/Servers/Common/vtkProcessModule.cxx, lin e 1045
vtkProcessModule (0x7b0a60): Object type: vtkOpenFOAMReader, could not find requ ested method: "SetTimeStep"
or the method was called with incorrect arguments.

while processing
Message 0 = Invoke
Argument 0 = id_value {86}
Argument 1 = string_value {SetTimeStep}
Argument 2 = int32_value {0}

ERROR: In /home/jaswi/Sources/ParaView3/Servers/Common/vtkProcessModule.cxx, lin e 1046
vtkProcessModule (0x7b0a60): Aborting execution for debugging purposes.

-----------
Just for your information I am compiling paraview 3.5 which I pulled out from the CVS. To compile it, I am using:

- cmake-2.6.3
- qt - 4.3.1
- Python 2.5.1
- gcc (GCC) 4.3.1

on my OpenSUSE 10.3 box.

After I load the plugins manually everything works fine. Still have to figure what I did wrong. If anybody knows the reason please share.

One more thing which is not working for me is the video. When I try to save my animation , I do not get any of the video formats. Can somebody please help me on this.

Takuya, I have one more doubt. There is a link at the bottom of the wiki page :

https://of-interfaces.svn.sourceforg...r23-VTKcontrib

When i compare the contents of the folders with the contents of the tar ball at this link :

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/of-...gz?use_mirror=

then the {.cxx, .h } files are same but the CMakeLists.txt.diff is missing from the tar ball. The script, as far as I understand, copies the files for the serial reader and that's it . Also the reader.xml is not modified as instructed in contents at svn link.
Please comment if time permits.

I am also a bit confused about the step where I build the parallelized reader. It asks to:

" create a build directory and then
Run ccmake from within the build directory. Set ParaView_DIR to your ParaView build directory (not the source directory) at the command line. "

Does this implies that the plugins for the parallelized reader have to be build into separate directory ? I am already building the Paraview out of source (withPARAVIEW_USE_MPI=ON) in a separate build directory.

I will go through the whole process once again and see if I can find the reason why this is happening.

Thanks

Best Regards
Jaswi

You have to copy the plugins into one of the ParaView plugin directories. The directories are listed in the Plugin Manager panel (Tools -> Manage Plugins/Extensions...).

Perhaps you need a particular version of ffmpeg. See http://www.paraview.org/Wiki/ParaView_Binaries .

CMakeLists.txt.diff is missing from the tarball because you don't need to modify CMakeLists.txt if you intend to install the tarball version.

Please comment if time permits.
You have to hand-edit readers.xml as written in INSTALL if you intend to install the svn-version.

Right. Hence after all you are going to have
  • ParaView source directory
  • ParaView build directory
  • Plugin source directory
  • Plugin build directory
if you build the tarball version.

Hope this helps.

Hi Takuya

Thanks for the help.

I created a directory "plugins" in bin and copied the newly created plugins:

libPOpenFOAMPanel.so
libPOpenFOAMReaderSMPlugin.so

into /Builds/paraview-3.5/bin/plugins. (I am using in-build paraview - no installations). Everything works fine.

Regarding the ffmpeg - the problem is solved as well. I took the ffmpeg from the link provided on paraview website ( http://www.paraview.org/Wiki/ParaView_Binaries). Followed the instructions given in README and it worked. Anybody having problem with it please not that it has to be built and installed before you can specify the paths to it while configuring your paraview build.

NOTE: Any body trying the latest ffmpeg source from http://www.ffmpeg.org/download.html , it will not work as the variable "img_convert" used in the "Sources/ParaView3/VTK/IO/vtkFFMPEGWriter.cxx " is no more supported in the latest release. Stick to the link provided on the Paraview website

One last question regarding the python support. When ever I open the Tools --> python shell, I get the following message:

>>> from paraview.simple.import *
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
ImportError: No module named paraview
>>>

Could you please suggest what is wrong . Do I need to setup some environment variable so that the module could be located

Thanks for the tips and the reader once again

Kind Regards
Jaswi

Hi all,

I'm trying to build the Parallel reader plugins for Takuya's reader and am having some problems. I'm using ParaView3.5 from CVS on an Intel Macbook Pro and am compiling it with PARAVIEW_USE_MPI=OFF (because I can't seem to get it to build otherwise). I use the preinstall.sh script for "installing" the Serial reader and then I ccmake and make and ParaView builds and runs fine. Then I make a build directory for the Parallel reader and cd to it and run ccmake and set CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE to Release and configure and load. Then when I "make" I get this error:

Thanks for any help!

Hi Bill,

The serial reader (vtkOpenFOAMReader.{cxx,h}) may not have been installed properly by preInstall.sh. Can you
  1. manually copy the reader files into the ParaView3/VTK/IO directory of your ParaView source tree
  2. re-run make under your ParaView build directory
  3. re-run make under your plugin directory?

Takuya,

Thanks for the quick reply. I did what you said. And got a the same error, but in a different place in the build.

No it still seems to be reading the original vtkOpenFOAMReader.h. Please double check that vtkOpenFOAMReader.{cxx,h} have been replaced by the ones included in the reader package. And please don't forget to rebuild ParaView itself. Otherwise the reader won't work even if the compilation of the plugins are successful.

Ah. Okay. You have messed up something by the existences of two directories with similar and thus confusing names

/Volumes/openFOAM/ThirdParty/ParaView3.5-cvs/
/Volumes/openFOAM/ThirdParty/ParaView3.5/

I would suggest removing either one of the two and start over with distinctive directory names.

Hi Takuya

I just wanted to bring my previous post to your attention.

Thanks for the help. I just have issue which is still not solved and that is with python plugin. When ever I open the Tools --> python shell, I get the following message:

>>> from paraview.simple.import *
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
ImportError: No module named paraview
>>>

Could you please suggest what is wrong . Do I need to setup some environment variable so that the module could be located

Thanks for the tips and the reader once again

Kind Regards
Jaswi

Hi Jaswi,
No idea if setting usual environment variables (LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PYTHONPATH) doesn't work, as I have never had the problem. Anyone else?

Hi Takuya,

I don't know if this is know: The current stable reader (20081005) does not build with Paraview3.6.1 out of OpenFOAM (at least for me). I can build and install paraview however get an error message as soon as I try to read a file into Paraview using the "all" option:

ERROR: In /data/brblo/Softwareupdates/Paraview/ParaView3.6.1-src/Servers/Common/vtkProcessModule.cxx, line 1049
vtkProcessModule (0x6a2e10): Object type: vtkOpenFOAMReader, could not find requested method: "SetTimeStep"
or the method was called with incorrect arguments.

while processing
Message 0 = Invoke
Argument 0 = id_value {257}
Argument 1 = string_value {SetTimeStep}
Argument 2 = int32_value {0}

ERROR: In /data/brblo/Softwareupdates/Paraview/ParaView3.6.1-src/Servers/Common/vtkProcessModule.cxx, line 1050
vtkProcessModule (0x6a2e10): Aborting execution for debugging purposes.

This error goes up instead of the normal dialog window asking th euser what kind of format the file has.
