What is the best solver used for modeling motion of the granular medium?

Hi!
I've got a question: What is the best solver used for modeling motion of the granular medium? I mean bulk solids, such as sand or gravel. Is it possible with OpenFoam? Best regards Shakir. |

Another keyword: DEM (Discrete (Distinct) Element Method (Model)). There are some solvers meant specifically for this, e.g., YADE; and then there is LIGGGTHS, based on a molecular dynamics solver LAMMPS, coupled to OF to produce CFD-DEM.
Or you can kludge your own app for that, like I did some time ago... |

Thank you for replying me! I consider the granular medium as a non-Newtonian fluid. But I have no experience in writing their applications for OpenFOAM. I would be very grateful if you could send me your application and test case for studying! With best wishes Shakir |

Hi i model debris flows and adapted the 4-way coupling of DPMFoam to my debris flow adapted version of interMixingFoam debrisInterMixing in debrisInterMixingLP- but to couple to large colliding particles that can do resolved CFD-DEM by clamping several particles together, the current best way is the coupling of YADE-OpenFOAM, https://yade-dem.org/doc/FoamCoupling.html
the interMixingFoam-DPMFoam based debrisInterMixingLP coupled well with YADE, based on YADE-OpenFOAM, only the limitations to stokes drag have to be extended to account for all particle forces and cell-dependent viscosity and density. |
