Rotating channel

Hello Everyone,
I want to start a calculation on a rotating channel. In that case the governing equations change due to the Coriolis force. Has anybody adjusted a solver or turbulence model to capture these effects? Thanks for your help, hagen |

Thanks for your suggestion. However, I think that the MRFSimpleFoam solver alone is not sufficient to account for RANS system rotation thoroughly, since not only the solver, i.e. the momentum equation, but also the turbulence model as well as the scalar flux model (if the energy equation needs to be solved) has to be extended. An additional production term due to Coriolis acceleration appears in both the transport equation for Reynolds stress and the scalar transport equation. More details can be found in the paper by Johnston, Halleen and Lezius (JFM 56, pp. 533-557, 1972). An exemplary extension for an explicit scalar flux model can be found in Younis et al. (Journal Heat Transfer, 132, 2010). Last year I implemented both into OpenFOAM on the basis of SSG and LRR. Hi Hagen,
Could I please draw your attention to http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/fluent/99552-3d-rotating-channel.html#post353897. I've trying to model a 3D rotating channel using FLUENT. I've been unable to match my Nu plots with that of an expermental analysis conducted by Wagner et al 1991. I'm currently using a MRF with a constant angular velocity. Are you suggesting that additional source terms for the body forces induced by coriolis acceleration need to be included even if we are using a MRF?? Regards, |

Hi,Hagen:
I'm just struggling in this problem using DNS. I modified the icoFoam by adding the Coriolics force, and the centrifugal force is considered to be coupling with the pressure gradient term, so no specially term is added with centrifugal force. I ran the rotating case with a satisfied non-rotating case as the initial condition yesterday, until now the velocity is still increasing(my computer is too slow) , although the tendency of the Reynolds stress is right , the value is not satisfactory and also the U+ distribution along with y+.
