Dear Foamers,

Is it possible to get a real 3D mesh starting from a 2D mesh (fluent or gambit) or an axisymetric geometry from OpenFoam?

Best regards.

Hello, fluentMeshToFoam and makeAxialMesh are your friends,

Enjoy!

Hi santiagomarquezd,

First,thanks for your response.

Yes i have used makeAxiamesh in order to have an axisymetric mesh and it works well but what i need now is to implement the global geometry ( a real 3d mesh not an axisymetric) is it possible to convert my mesh (2d or 3d axisymetric) to a real geometry.

Best regards.

Hhmm, I see, the idea is, for example if you have a 5 degree "axisymmetric" mesh for FOAM, to get a 360 degree one repeating the first one 72 times or something like this. The matter is that this is not the only way, you might want the full 3D with tetras, etc. not repeating the original elements. The repeating way can be done with Gambit, but I don't have any other idea.

Regards.

But repeating the original mesh 72 times will not change the coordinates so i can't have the ful geometry, what do you think?

Regards.

Have a look at the extrudeMesh-utilitiy. It might be just what you're looking for

Hi Bernhard,

Thanks for your response.

The user guide didn't explain this utility but it seems that just what i'm looking for.

Can i have a sphere starting from my mesh (image in attach) (i have both 2d and axisymetric)

Best regards

Don't know. Only used it once myself. Have a look at the dictionary that is in the directory of the sources ($FOAM_UTILITIES/mesh/generation I think) that is about all the documentation you're going to find

What are you referring to with "will not change the coordinates"?

Hi,

I got my mesh from fluentMeshTOFoam conversion i don't have a blockMeshDict file so i cannot do a repeatin process, what do you think?

ExtrudeMesh utility can fo that for me but there is no documentation to explain it, you have any idea?

Regards.

I never used this tool, but, Do want to do this task with FOAM tools? I think in this case is easier to do it directly in Gambit and then export a full 3D .msh.

Regards.

I'm thinkig to do it with gambit but the concept of my work (@university) is to all the job with 0$ and this will be my last activity so i hope continue to use FOAM.

Thanks a lot.

Maybe using GMSH?

Best.

If anyone is interested, I have managed to produce a 3D axisymmetric mesh from a 2D plane mesh. (I'm looking at axisymmetric bodies at an angle to the flow). Feel free to message or email me and I can guide you through the steps.
