Is my system possible to model using OpenFoam?

Hello everyone,

I'm very new to CFD but I have decent experience with numerical modeling. You guys come across as very helpful people who are passionate about what they do, so I'm sure you can answer my question

The system which I am working on consists of a cylindrical beam with a single, fixed attachment point on one side that is entirely immersed in water. As the medium (the water) is disrupted by a flow, the beam responds to the hydrodynamic force and moves about its fixed end. What makes this system complicated is that the the pressure and velocity gradients must be solved in relation to the position of the beam.

My question is would this be too much hassle in OpenFoam? If so, should I try to gain access to a commercial multiphysics solution?

I remember seeing just such a simulation at the OpenFOAM workshop in Montreal. Found the animation: http://powerlab.fsb.hr/ped/kturbo/op.../3dBeamFsi.mpg Is that the sort of thing you are talking about?

Wow, the similarities are uncanny! I will look in to the example you provided.

It seems advanced, but certainly feasible. Thanks for your help. I'm so glad you went to that conference

It was a good conference. I believe that simulation requires the dev version (OpenFOAM-1.5-dev) because of the mesh motion, but it's not something I know much about. Good luck!
