Dear Foamers,
i need to extract data from paraView to compare them with data in Tecplot. Using foamToTecplot360, all time steps data converts to plt files. but after opening tecplot software and reading plt files an error says which grid should be import first . by importing boundrymesh files first also the error is same as before. How can i use Tecplot360 for reading OpenFOAM data in OF1.7? |

Hello Maysmech,
Tecplot 360 does require the importing of the boundary mesh file before the solution files, and I note that that is what you are doing. If you want to send us a snapshot of your data, we could look at it to see if we can be of some assistance with the problem. Scott |

Dear Scott,
Thank you. the problem is i don't know which file should be imported as mesh to tecplot. i try boundarymesh files which created by foamToTecplot360 but its error is same. i 've tried for cavity tutorial to send data to tecplot for comparison with benchmarks. i haven't found any solution. |

Maybe you already found it:
when running foamToTecplot360, not only a *.plt file for each time directory is written, but also a *_grid.plt file. In the tecplot data loader you have to click the button "multiple files" and select the grid file first. Then you can select the time file and it should work. However, I wonder if it's possible to open multiple time files at once to be able to see the different time steps as animation (similar to what's possible in paraview). selecting multiple time files doesn't work for me, all except the last one have empty fields (zeros throughout the domain) ... Does anybody have a solution for that? Regards, bb |

Yeah, I just noticed that it's working for me too, I made a stupid mistake. Animations and all other stuff now works fine!

Hello guys,
I'm new in OF, and before try it I have been working with Fortran code and Tecplot like a post processing tool. I my opinion Tecplot is more friendly than ParaView, so I decide to use OF with my simulation code together with Tecplot for post processing my results. So, this is my question, how I can transfer my data to Tecplot ? There is some program for this ? I appreciate your opinion. Cheers !! Rodrigo |

Hello Rodrigo,
One can download the foamToTecplot360 converter from OpenCFD's Third-Party source pack here: http://www.openfoam.com/download/source.php Cheers, Scott |

Hi Scott,
The foamToTecplot is working well, but I don't know how to visualise the freestream. The converter made 3 directories (file_0, file_1 and file_grid) and 2 folders (boundaryMesh and lagrangian). When a tried to open de file_0 or file_1, Tecplot give me the follow information ''A grid file must be specified before any solution files that depends on it are specified ". So, how should I open the files and visualise my results ? Thanks again for your help. Rodrigo |

hello all,
Again, thank you for the information. Everything is working well with foamToTecplot360. Now I have other question. My results is shown in 3D, but I can't visualize the scale of my geometry, i.e., the axis (x, y and z). Somebody knows how to do this ? Thanks a lot. |

I believe you are looking to add the X, Y, & Z axis to your 3D geometry. The default view for Tecplot 360 is to have these "off", but one can add them by going the Menu bar Plot>>Axis Show X, Show Y, & Show Z.
More training tips can be found at this link: http://tecplottalk.com/viewtopic.php?t=948 Cheers, Scott |

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your help. It's working and now I have the axis. Enjoying the moment, I would like to do other question. When I finish my simulations, the openFoam give me information about, velocity, temperature, density, etc, but I'd like to calculate the Mach number directly in the Tecplot. In this sense, I used ->menu bar->alter->specify equation. Mach number is calculate as follows: M = Velocity / sqrt(gama*R*T) My equation: {M} = V39 / sqrt(1.4*286.9*V29) After to do this, Tecplot give me the information "overflow or underflow in divide operation". You know about this problem Scott ? Cheers, Rodrigo |

Rodrigo,
Sorry - I am not sure why you are getting an overflow error. You might try letting Tecplot 360 calculate the Mach number via our Analyze feature. In the main menu click on Analyze>>Calculate>>Select (Function) Mach Number. Regards, Scott |
