OpenFOAM is not based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). It solves equations using the Finite Volume Method (FVM), which can be used but it is not commonly used for structural mechanics. You can check the OpenFOAM user guide and do the "Stress analysis of a plate with a hole" (http://www.openfoam.org/docs/user/plateHole.php) tutorial for a first glimpse.
