Default Overset (Chimera) with OpenFOAM

Hello,

is it possible with FOAM to perform Overset (Chimera) simulations? E.g. I would like to compute a rotating helicopter blade in a free stream. Another example would be to simulate a closing valve where the valve ball is meshed in one mesh and imbedded into a background mesh of the channel geometry.

Thanks a lot for any hints. Alan

Nope, no Chimera meshes are allowed. The mesh support is for arbitrary polyhedral meshes but the space needs to be filled without overlap.

If you want to do cases like valve or a rotating helicopter blade, you should use the sliding mesh capability. This means you've got two meshes next to each other and one rotates relative to the other. At every time step, they get re-connected by re-creating the interface faces. Have a look at the icoTopoFoam example on a mixer vessel.

Enjoy,

Hrv

Thanks a lot for your comments (puno vam hvala).

Can I handle completely closing valves with OpenFOAM? E.i. the gap becomes zero and the flow seases - or the other way round: a completely closed valve opens up because of increasing pressure force?

I will test out your suggestions (and probably come back with a lot of questions

Well, it is possible. See http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...tml#post244266

Hi, David,

I am very impressed by your work on integrating overset with OpenFOAM.

I am wondering if we can discuss your work in more detail?

My email is: phsieh2005@yahoo.com

Thanks!

David

Do you have any plans to release your overset grid functionality to the wider OpenFOAM community?

Thanks!

We are unfortunately not permitted to give out the library at this time, but we will try to share our experiences and some of the details of the implementation at the upcoming OpenFOAM workshops.

Is this because of restrictions having been placed on DirtLib and Sugarr?
