In OpenFOAM, a flow-induced or a prescribed motion can be modeled using a sixDoF or rigid-body motion solver. But how can we superimpose these two kinds of motion together?

For example, I want to prescribe the rotating speed of a cylinder in a flow, but meanwhile, the cylinder can be translated by the flow. That means, the rotating motion (around its local axis) is prescribed but the flow induces the translation. The problem is illustrated in the figure attached.

Anyone can give some hints or help?

Thanks!

Michael

The problems you raise are referred to as fluid-structure interaction problems. There has been a lot of work done on these problems. One approach is to couple a flow solver like OpenFoam to a structure solver using a coupling solver like e.f. PreCise. Many other approaches exist. Dr. Google might be a good friend here.

Domenico,
Thank you for your reply. I searched on Google but did not find a similar model done by others. I believe this problem should be able to be set up in OpenFOAM alone since the solid body motion is simple and does not need an external solid solver. The only problem is how to superimpose the passive (flow-induced) motion onto the active (prescribed) motion. I'm willing to write a little code if it is necessary.

See e.g. http://www.wolfdynamics.com/training...s_2021_OF8.pdf for rigid body motion in ambient fluid. With more effort I can find tutorials on the topic given at OPFW in Genova this summer.

See e.g.

https://precice.org/adapter-openfoam-overview.html for deforming bodies.

Please give it a look and get in touch here with more detailed questions.

Good luck, Domenico.
