Multivariate Convection

Dear all,
Looking through some of the combustion solvers, I noticed the use of multivariate convection schemes. I'm not familiar with what these are, and a google search hasn't helped much. Is anybody able to shed some light on how they differ from standard convection schemes? Regards,
