I am looking for a steady compressible solver to run supersonic flow in a nozzle. Is it possible?
Thank you very much. Sylvain |

Hi Sylvain Martel
I think you can use rhoSimpleFoam. Good luck Ata |

I try to use it but i cannot obtain a choked flow in a nozzle with shock wave in the divergent section. Maybe it is because of my test case.
For this reason, I would like to know if the rhosimplefoam solver is able to do this task. Thank you! SM Last edited by smart; August 27, 2010 at 16:02. |

hi smart
can you tell me which version of OpenFoam r u using if u use 1.5 then its better to use rhoturbFoam or if u use 1.6 then use sonicFoam |

I use the OF-1.5-dev. I know that sonicFoam or rhoturbFoam can do that but these solver are for unsteady state flow. I am looking about a steady-state compressible solver like rhoSimpleFoam. I would like to know if the compressibility effect are taken into account. In fact, in my nozzle, inlet is subsonic and outlet is supersonic with a choked point at the throat.
What is the limitation of rhoSimpleFoam in regard to the compressibility effect? SM |

when ever a flow is changing from subsonic to supersonic, then the flow is no more steady.
actually the flow is highly compressible(in your case sics you said supersonic outlet) at the outlet and you get a series of shock waves and expansion waves. so in order to predict this you need a compressible turbulent solver. Last edited by kiran; August 6, 2010 at 15:06. |

However we have a transient flow behavior from subsonic to supersonic, I think that the flow can be in steady-state. Of course, the turbulent component is not steady but the mean part is.
I would like to know if I can simulate flow: 1- choked flow without shock wave (exit pressure = ambiant pressure) 2- choked flow with shock wave in divergent section (exit pressure = ambiant pressure) SM Last edited by smart; August 27, 2010 at 16:04. |

Hi smart
I think may be you can use steady state scheme for time derivative in an unsteady solver an get steady state solution. Good luck Ata |

Hi folks,
I am also facing same kind of dilemma, that which solver of OF 1.7 is good for a simulation of a flow having velocities ranging between M=0.3 to M=1.0..??? there are so many options available and so little in User guide about them, a newbie like me is really struggling to decide upon one solver.. my friend suggested me "rhoturbFoam" but its not there in OF 1.7??? so which solver can be used instead of "rhoturbFoam"??? Please can anyone help me?? Also is there any way i can get more info on the solvers other than the user guide??
