Hi,

My understanding is that, there can be total-pressure loss in a flow only through friction (incompressible flows). So any solver that I use needs to have energy equation solved, so that it can account loss of heat and hence total pressure due to friction.

What about simpleFoam. I only see a pEqn and a UEqn.H in the simpleFoam source code. Hence it doesn't look like solving for heat. In that case, can I use simpleFoam to calculate loss of head in pipes?

I, nevertheless, tried this. And there was some total pressure loss between two points. Is this valid?

Thank You
Prapanj.

Hi prapanj,
yes you can use a CFD solver without solving the energy equation to solve friction : viscosity and so friction is solve in the Navier-Stokes equation. The result of the friction is just not converted into temperature but is similar to an energy sink. Consequently, you can use simpleFoam to calculate losses in your pipes.
