Hello, everyone,
I am new to openfoam. I am interested in modelling the atomization process of spray nozzle. In ansys fluent, there is a vof to dpm solver. So, I am wondering is there any similar solver in openfoam to carry out vof-to-dpm simulation? Many thanks. |

Apologies for being new to the terminology: what is "dpm" here?
OpenFoam does have volume-of-fluid (VOF) solver interFoam https://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/InterFoam and friends (e.g. extension to reactive flow)https://www.openfoam.com/documentati...andard-solvers (search volume of volume). OpenFoam does has a Dense Particle Method (DPM) solver DPMFoam https://www.openfoam.com/documentati...n/DPMFoam.html Atomization of sprays in OpenFoam was considered in the PhD thesis of Likun Ma https://repository.tudelft.nl/record...4-e36016bc313a Not sure how any of above relates to your query. |

Hi Domenico Lahaye, thanks a lot for your reply.
what is "dpm" here? It is the discrete phase model in ansys fluent, similar to Dense Particle Method in openfoam. VOF Previously, it was normally using VOF to study the atomization process. But it is too expense for VOF to meet the mesh requirements if tiny droplets are generated. Recently, some commercial cfd softwares developed VOF to DPM solver to resolve this issue. When small droplets form from the breakup, the droplets will transfer from euler phase to discrete particle phase and the corresponding "refined mesh" can be turned back to "coarse mesh". So I am wondering if openform has made the developments in the recent releases. PhD thesis of Likun Ma I just quickly looked at the thesis. I think it ignored modelling the true atmozation process like VOF, just using the dpm. Quote:

If I'm not mistaken, please see this journal publication titled "3D-coupling of Volume-of-Fluid and Lagrangian particle tracking for spray atomization simulation in OpenFOAM".
