Hi Foamers,

I was wondering if OpenFOAM has any dynamic solver in which you can move the whole domain with a rigid body. I want to move the whole domain in order to avoid too big mesh deformations which could make diverge the simulation.

I know that feature is available in Starccm+ but after studying rigidBodyMotion and sixDoFRigidBodyMotion I couldn't find anything similar.

Any help is appreciated.

Kind regards,

Manu

SixDoFRigidBodyMotion might be the one you are looking for. Have you tried sloshing tutorials?

Hi Michael,

First of all, thank you for your quick answer.

As far as I know, in these sloshing tutorials you have a prescribed motion of the mesh. In my case I cannot define the trim of the boat (rotation around Y axis) and heave (translation in the Z axis). These are two variables that I get to know once the simulation is converged.

Please, correct me if I am wrong.

Kind regards,

Manu

Hi Manu,

you are right, for rigidBodyDynamics and sixDoFRigidBodyMotions you can not move the entire mesh (weather for all nor selected DoF's), which would be a nice and helpfull feature for some applications.

You can try to misuse the SLERP interpolation and change the innerDistance to some value greater than your domain dimension. Not sure if this works, but should be easily done.

Best,
Jan
