PlasmaCFD is on a distinguished road
Dear community,

I am pretty new to OpenFoam and would like to apply it to plasma discharges, i.e. a transient solver for incompressible, multi-component (ions, electrons, neutrals) flows with electric fields.

Now, I went through the list of solvers, but couldnt find one dedicated for the simulation of plasmas. I guess, that I will be developing my own solver. Is there anybody who has done plasma simulations with OpenFoam who could recommend a solver to start with? Should I rather start with a multicomponent solver or with a pimple solver, that I extend to three components myself?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hello PlasmaCFD,

i cant help u with the OpenFOAM question, but did u take a look at the various Particle-in-Cell(PIC) codes that are aviable? PIC (PIConGPU as example) is used for the usecase you describe alot. Cfd is not often used for plasma applications as the plasma typically is near vaccum ?

thanks for pointing out the PIC solvers in OpenFoam, Papellau. That is also very interesting. But the case that I am looking at is a plasma discharges at atmospheric pressure. So I was kind of hoping to set up the plasma equations on top of the CFD framework provided by OpenFoam. I thought if there is solvers for three components, possibly already having electric fields included, these may be good to start with?
