Hi all,

I am completely new to OpenFOAM and am doing some initial exploratory research to see if it is able to offer me the functionality I need. For reference I am a CFX user looking to move away from the commercial software approach!!

I am working on a project where I am interested in modelling flow over a relatively streamlined body with a very bluff surface appendage. I'm struggling to get good drag results for the appendage with a purely RANS based approach and am thinking that taking a DES approach might imporove things.... BUT, I need to attempt to capture boundary layer transition on the streamlined body in order to predict the total drag of the 'assembly' as reliably as possible.

I see in ANSYS that I can use k-w SST coupled with either a 1-equation or 2-equation transition model as the RANS part of the DES simulation but I cant find anything comparable in OpenFOAM.

Is it possible to do what I want to do in OpenFOAM or is there some alternative method? Sorry if I'm covering a topic thats already been discussed!!

Thanks

Hi,

What version of OpenFoam are you using? Starting from v1612 onwards they've included the 4-equation LCTM (Langtry-Menter) predictive transition model as kOmegaSSTLM
If you look in the tutorials under incompressible/simpleFoam/T3A there's an example of how to use it and also has some experimental data to compare against.

Good luck
