Hello guys,

I am testing the overset feature in esi's OpenFOAM 1706 release, namely the /incompressible/overSimpleFoam/aeroFoil tutorial, which is a classic airfoil 2D in a windtunnel test.

The case runs smoothely using the Allrun.pre and Allrun script without any complaints. However when I inspect the velocity magnitude in paraview, I get the attached picture. It seems like the flow information cannnot cross the border between overset- and background-mesh.

What am I doing wrong here? Any help is appreciated!

Best regards,

Kate

Hello, Kate.

I am relatively new to OpenFoam, but I happened to stumble into the same problem as you, although in different circumstances.

In my case, I was able to run the tutorial smoothly and my meshes are properly merged, with information from the aerofoil mesh being properly transferred to the background one and viceversa (this is the philosophy of overset meshes, if I understand correctly). When I changed the airspeed (from 10 m/s to 90 m/s), the simulation still runs smoothly and there is still continuity of the data across the border between meshes, so no problems up to this point.

However, I tried to adapt the tutorial to my own airfoil, which is a true 3D case (finite wingspan). This meant I had to "skip" the script extrudeMeshDict for both the aerofoil mesh and the background mesh, but I still needed to merge the meshes. I did this succesfully and ran the simulation. This time around, nevertheless, the continuity of data across the mesh border was lost completely. I get exactly the same problem as you do, where the effect of the aerofoil on the flow can only be seen in the aerofoil mesh, but not on the background mesh downstream.

Have you been able to solve this issue? Or, does anyone else have any ideas regarding the source of the problem?

Best regards

HI,

no I have not been able to resolve this issue. To be clear, I think the problem is not the calculation but the postprocessing in paraview. How do you visualize the results? Can you post a step by step guide?

Best regards,

Kate
