Hello guys,

I have started to get familiar with OpenFOAM. Is there anyone out there who can offer some advice to either set a up a new case or (preferably) alter an existing case to get an idea of the performance of our foils. We have several foils, all with .stl files. We want to import them info OpenFOAM and start comparing them. When we understand how to use the CDF, we want to use them to design new foils as well.

I am picking my way through OpenFOAM at a slow pace, but learning everyday.

I am enjoying the learning, and would be very grateful to anyone who would like to help.

Cheers,

Andrew

out of curiosity, are we talking about wave (or free surface) piercing foils, cavitating foils, or what?

for every aspect you'll need different solver, strategies, etc...

Independent on the type of hydrofoil, I would strongly recommend to start with some simple, 2D, incompressible (air|hydro)foil simulations. For those cases the density of file fluid does not matter (as long as it is incompressible and far away from any free surface), and you can use results from airfoil studies as reference. There are a lot of comparison results with f.ex. NACA 4-digit airfoils (ex. NACA-0015).

I suggest to start with Google: https://www.google.com/search?client...utf-8&oe=utf-8
