Normal derivative on boundary

Hi,
I need to compute the normal derivative of a volScalarField T on the boundary. I've seen some threads on the use of snGrad but I don't get the idea, what is snGrad returning: volScalarField, scalarField? where does it get the normal vector from? Thank you.
