Using MPI calls in OpenFOAM

Dear OpenFOAM community,
I want to use MPI to couple an OpenFOAM solver to an external code using an MPMD approach. Can I make calls to MPI functions in my OpenFOAM solver? Do I have to #include <mpi.h> somewhere to do so?
