scotch and metis's mathematical knowledge

Hi guys,

I know OpenFOAM can use scotch and metis to do mesh decomposition. I found in these pages that scotch and metis tend to be some mathematical tools.

So Im curious about these mathematical tools relationship with mesh decomposition. Or can anybody do a basic mathematical intro about scotch and metis? Thx.

There seems to be a good amount of algorithm detail in the users guides:

Might be a good place to start!
