The fan boundary condition in OpenFOAM, can it only be used in a duct/tunnel or for a ducted fan?

If I want to model a fan in free stream, can I only use rotorDisk?

I am asking, as it looks like the fan boundary condition needs to have baffles around it, at least I have neither found an example nor a way to use it without baffles.
