new variable output as a file in openfoam for Ensight plot

Hi, everyone , I am running the sprayFoam and want to plot the liquid penetration length in Ensight. Although the liquid penetration length is output in log.file, I don't know how to make it out in Ensight's variables column. As you know, any variable that is output as a file in openfoam then can be plot in Ensight. And I got to use Ensight to plot it. I know I should declare the variable in openfoam's source code, but I don't know how to do it specificly as I'm not familiar with c++. Thanks for your help.

I know this is a year and a half later, but I stumbled across this post and I am working on this very problem (not necessarily the Ensight part). I'm planning on figuring out how to get OpenFOAM to write a separate output file just for the liquid penetration length and time. I'm also planning on adding a vapor penetration length calculation and adding that to the output file, all just for easier plotting of these variables over time.

If you reply here I would be happy to update you on my progress. Just let me know.
