Dear Foamers,

I am very pleased to announce that Deltares will be hosting a two day workshop on numerical modeling of free surface flows. The workshop will take place on June 22nd and 23rd 2015 in Delft, The Netherlands.

Besides giving the participants an introduction to the usage of the cutting edge open-source numerical tools, special attention will be paid to efficiency and how to ensure that a high quality solution is obtained. This is done via lectures and relevant hands-on exercises. The tools that will be covered are the open-source and fully nonlinear potential flow solver, OceanWave3D (developed at the Technical University of Denmark) and the open-source general purpose CFD-toolbox OpenFoamŪ coupled with waves2Foam (originally developed at the Technical university of Denmark and now maintained and expanded from within Deltares).

Below you find a short summary of topics and case studies that will be covered during the workshop. Attached to this communication is the official invitation with the full program and signup details (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...rkshop2015.pdf).

Topics
  • Basic wave theory
  • Numerical modeling of water waves
The topic includes discussion on wave generation and absorption and choice of appropriate boundary conditions. Furthermore, aspects of accuracy, quality and efficiency will be covered.
  • Detailed fluid-structure interaction
Modeling of permeable structures and aspects on turbulence modeling for free surface flows.
  • Advanced pre- and post-processing tools
Run-time extraction of wave properties and their post-processing (in time and frequency domain).
Case studies
  • Offshore wind
Efficient computations of fully nonlinear wave loads on monopile foundations for offshore wind turbine generators. Detailed modeling of slamming wave loads will be discussed.
  • Coastal structures
Numerical modeling of the interaction between water waves and a permeable coastal structure. A method to compute the reflection from and transmission through the structure will be presented.

Important dates:
  • March 1st: Registration for the workshop is opening.
  • May 1st : Deadline for registration.
  • June 22nd-23rd: The course takes place in Delft, The Netherlands

In case of any questions please do not hesitate to contact me on niels.jacobsen at deltares.nl

Kind regards,

Niels
