Hello and a Good evening,

I was looking through the source code of OpenFOAM, and also the various presentations, slides, PDFs, etc.... available from Hrv's Powerlab FTP site, and found that in theory, OpenFOAM has had Adaptive Mesh Refining functionality for some time now.

However, everytime, I keep coming up with the limitation, that the code so far works only for Hexahedral meshes.... or atleast, thats what I have understood.

Has anyone tried to run AMR on pure tetrahedral meshes? Has it been avoided so far because it is a complex topic to jump into, or was it just that there has been no requirement (so far)?

Since I work with pure tetrahedral meshes, I was thinking of AMR for tetrahedral meshes.... can anyone give me some pointers on this? Techniques.... approaches... algorithms....etc..?

For example, if I split a tet into 8 smaller tets, how do I go about ensuring connectivity of the newly generated cells, faces and points with the already existent mesh in OpenFOAM?

Hoping to start an interesting discussion :-)! And some interesting ideas, and finally, hopefully a working setup in OpenFOAM for tet meshes.

Have a lovely weekend!

Philippose

Philippose: I am intrigued concerning the mention of adaptive refinement. Would you happen to know by any chance whether there is an interfoam solver floating around which can refine the mesh around the interface automatically. Think for instance the following animation:

Is it just a question of changing the staticFvMesh entry to something else in dynamicMeshDict?

Greetings pUl|,
Yes that image/animation has the prominent display on http://www.opencfd.co.uk/index.html, but can't find any information how to set up a calculation with automatic mesh refinement at the free surface ... so far ... it's a pity ... ;-)

We need to wait. I'm sure it will be released sooner or later. I have no complaints

Sure, it looks like we have to wait. But it is hard to wait if you see something that will be lots of fun to "play" with :-)

Dear FOAMers,

Any progress on dynamic mesh refinement? Has anybody a demo-file for automatic mesh refinement as shown above?

Holger

Hello everybody!

I am a new user of OpenFoam and I would know if it is possible to make an AMR in a 3D free surface study with the 2.2.2 version. ( I have made the mesh with blockMesh utility )

I thank you very much for your answer

Hi,

I know it's a somewhat late reply, but maybe it's useful for some follow-up readers.

Have a look at the interDyMFoam tutorial case ../multiphase/interDyMFoam/ras/damBreakWithObstacle. Mesh refinement is defined in ./constant/dynamicMeshDict.

Hello,
found this thread by "OpenFOAM AMR + tetra mesh" and want to add that it looks like adaptive mesh works only with hex-mesh now (OpenFOAM v.3.0.1).
