Hello

Previously I had trouble simulating a laminar flow inside a cylinder and received help from here. I came to know about snappyHexMesh (SHM) during the process.

Now, I am trying to study laminar flow in an annulus. I first made the geometry using openSCAD and generated a base mesh using blockMesh that encloses the annulus. When I use SHM on this, it is meshing the hollow space (the empty space is considered as the simulation volume by SHM; I can see why it does that) rather than the whole geometry.

Can SHM be used for open surfaces? Please let me know. Is there any other way to mesh this configuration. If anyone has solved annular flow before, I would appreciate any little help you can offer.

Thanks,
Ajay

Hello Ajay,
maybe this thread can help you: Cylindrical annulus meshing
As for doing is with a CAD geometry and snappyHexMesh, i would assume that if you create you annulus as a "cylinder with a thick wall" and place the locationInMesh in the outer wall, you will get your desired domain?!

Hi Robert,

Thank you for the link. I will go through it. I earlier tried having the locationInMesh as a point that is in the "outer wall", as you have suggested. That resulted in an error saying that the point is outside the cylinder geometry (since the hollow space is considered as the "actual" geometry by openFoam).

Good morning Ajay,
just to be clear about what i wanted to suggest: Instead of constructing your annulus from two single walls (left image) you could try to create one big ring (right image) and place your locationInMesh there.
