I'm trying to better understand how to use layers with sHM and am hitting a dead end.

Here is a mesh of a single STL surface (a cylinder) with and without layer addition. The view shown is a slice at the mid section in both cases:

with layers on:

with layers off:

You'll see that other than my mess up with centering the first, the two meshes are identical.

Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong? Here's my snappyHexMeshDict:

You have nSurfaceLayers commented out in the layer specifications. Take out the double slash //. This could possibly be why the layers aren't showing up.

I uncommented the following section when producing the mesh with layers turned on:
Code:
layers
    { // I remove these comments to enable layering on the cylinder surface
//        cylinder_cylinder
//        {
//            nSurfaceLayers 25;
//        }

    }
Despite this, there seems to be no difference in the final mesh.

What type of geometry are you meshing?
Sorry, I realized this other thread addressed the same issue. I'm trying this now (featureAngle was 130 in my sHMDict).

In case that doesn't work, how does one increase the tolerances?

maybe all your newly added layers get filtered by your quality settings. You may wanna try the following:

Switch off all quality settings!

Then run SHM and check whether you get any layers. If you do, then the next thing is to find the right quality settings:

Run checkMesh to create sets of bad cells. You can then view those sets in paraview.

Change a few quality settings e.g. maxNonOrtho 85 and use checkMesh to see, if the quality of your mesh is ok.

Also: i recommend to use less layer iterations. nLayerIter 10 should be sufficient. Watch the terminal output when running SHM and see wether SHM finds a solution. If it doesn't you will probably need to alter your layer-settings or relax the quality settings.

I finally figured out that I was just referencing the wrong timestep with reconstructPar. I didn't realize that layer creation was done in timestep 3.

Thanks again,
