Hello all,

I was wondering if there are people who have experience regarding the difference in performance between OF compiled with gcc and icc. I couldn´t find much information about this topic so I guess that most people use gcc.

I am compiling with icc at the moment, and if it compiles without problems I can compare it but I am pretty sure that some of you have experience on that topic . I would be really happy about every kind of information concerning this matter.

There isn't much to say about it, but here goes:

• If you are using a machine with an AMD processor, then DO NOT USE ICC. Unless you're trying to prove something Why? Read this section on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_C...iler#Criticism
• You should use at least ICC 12.1: http://www.openfoam.org/mantisbt/view.php?id=437#c1072
• ICC sometimes looses the race against GCC: http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconVa..._compiler.html
• To further improve the performance of your build, consider tweaking the build options... see files at "OpenFOAM-*/wmake/rules/linuxIcc*/c*" and look for ICC options for the CPU model your machine has.
• There are a few threads here in the forum that talk about using ICC with OpenFOAM... I have a blog post to keep track of these, but I haven't updated it in a long while: GCC and other compiler issues with OpenFOAM
