Hi - I've been fiddling with OpenFOAM the last couple of days but haven't been able to find an answer to my problem (pls. tell me what else to post to help you help me :

System is uBuntu 7.10 - OpenFOAM 1.4.1 double precision

When running the 'cavity case' with icoFoam, nothing happens after the text scrolls by. Ie. no cavity.foam file is created
(blockMesh ran before that)
Heres the last part when I run icoFoam . cavity:

It seems that the solver ran properly and produced the time directories: 0.1 0.2....0.5
To see the results type:
paraFoam ./ cavity
in the icoFoam directory.
Indeed there is an error with your installation. Type:
ls /home/claus/OpenFOAM/linux/gcc-4.2.1
If you don't have it, then you did not install the gcc compiler.

Hi - thanks for responding

This is the console-output I get when running

claus@kafka:~/OpenFOAM/claus-1.4.1/run/tutorials/icoFoam$ paraFoam ./ cavity

cavity.foam never gets created it seems.

About gcc - shouldn't the gcc installed on my system be good enough? it is correctly located in /usr/bin/gcc

I cannot understand why a simple 'icoFoam . cavity' does not produce the files mentioned in the tutorial.

Thx

EDIT ! just tried the steps again before posting. Now it seems that a cavity.foam file is created, but it is empty and produces the error stated above - so still no go

Did you install any third party software (paraview, java and gcc)?
I ask because now I see you have java somewhere else too!
If you don't recompile anything, than you don't need the compiler. However, if you will do anything more than just tutorials, then it's most likely that you will need to modify slightly some of the solvers/utilities. In that case you have to use the compiler that comes with OpenFOAM (one of the reasons is that it is newer than the one in your linux distribution).
Now I'm curious if you have installed paraview...? paraFoam is just a script that uses paraview to print results, so if you didn't install it, no wonder it doesn't run.

well i DID install paraview - but im not sure I did it the right way - I extracted it in /opt/OpenFOAM-1.4.1/paraview-2.4.4 and linked the executable to /usr/local/bin along with the libs and 'include' -- paraview starts up fine with 'paraview' in a console and paraFoam succeeds in calling paraview (as the error-message states) but maybe thats not the way to do it?

But can't we agree that 'icoFoam . cavity' should create a cavity.foam file containing something?

Hi Claus,
No icoFoam . cavity doesn't create the cavity.foam file. This is created by the paraFoam utility (I think...).
I also think you have to install paraview in ~/OpenFOAM/linux/paraview-2.4.4, otherwise it will not be found. Please follow the instructions from the OpenFOAM download webpage. They are very simple, and you don't have to create any symbolic links.

hah! that did it!

I looked at 'paraFoam' and it is indeed 'paraFoam' that creates cavity.foam
-------------------
touch $caseName.foam
paraview paraFoam.pvs
rm paraFoam.pvs $caseName.foam 2>/dev/null
-------------------

Well I guess Im ready to get overwhelmed by OpenFOAM by now - I'll return with other questions in the forum thx for the help!

Gentlemen:

I am having the following problem with paraView. In the documentation for the cavity tutorial, I am trying to follow the instructions for plotting a graph. On page U-35, approx 4th paragraph, we are asked to select "scatter plot", from the Plot Type menu in the Display panel. I dont see Plot Type in the display panel.

Has anyone faced the same problem? I am running Paraview 3.3.0 on Suse 11.0

Thanks
Musa
