Hello everybody,

I am writing about floating structures and their implementation in OpenFOAM. A few months ago I simulated a floating body with wave load with OpenFOAM and 6DoF.
Actually I am trying to implement a fluid-structure-interaction. I am using the toolbox solids4Foam to solve this problem.

Is it in principle possible to combine solids4Foam with floating objects or some moving mesh? The aim is a flexible, elastic or plastic floating body with wave load.
I have already read the thread about sixDoFRigidBody motion, but there was no clear statement for me.
If it is possible, which conditions I have to choose?

I would be grateful about any help!

Hi Elstro,

As you know, 6DoF is a type of FSI where only the rigid motion of the solid object is considered.

A solid deformation solver (like solids4foam) is basically a generalisation of a 6DoF solver as it allows rigid motions but also solid body deformations. So the solid solver replaces the 6DoF solver. This is possible in solids4foam; see for example the work of Luofeng Huang simulating floating ice sheets: https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...29801818320936.

However, one of the challenges is restricting the rigid motions (just like in 6DoF) as the solid can start to float away.
