(0) I downloaded the installables for OpenFOAM-1.5 32-bit Linux version, using WindowsXP (using a cybercafe in India). I have verified that the MD5 signatures of the downloaded files match with those mentioned on the Downloads Web page.

(1) I then copied the distribution files to a different physical machine having openSUSE 10.3 (32-bit) installed on it.

The installation progressed smoothly, and it does seem OK at least by the "foamInstallationTest."

(2) Ref.: Point no. 6, "Getting Started," in the ReadMe.html file.

I am positive that "icoFoam" is not a part of the distribution for v1.5 at all, even though the ReadMe file does take it as the example to begin with.

I have searched not just in the "tutorials" directory but also everywhere else in the distribution.

Note again, the MD5 values do match. Therefore, I conclude that the installables are incomplete right off the source.

(3) I also tried the other available tutorial examples but had a problem with all of them while running "paraFoam." This is the same problem as has been mentioned in a previous thread (http://www.cfd-online.com/OpenFOAM_D...tml?1219929949) by Geurts Koen and later on in the same thread also by Hari Krishnan.

(4) All in all, I cannot run even a single example all the way starting from "blockMesh" through to "paraFoam," as advertised on Readme.html.

(5) Hope someone looks into it.

Obviously the 'bug' is not a real bug, but a mistake from your side, since I and many others have downloaded 1.5 successfully.

what happens if you skip the 'downloaded files using xp' and just use the linux machine?

Did you unpack it on the xp machine and then transfer or did you transfer the tar-file?
If you did the former, you have broken the rule of using a good filesystem and will be punished by using only short filenames with no difference in capital or lower letters.

Hello,

i've just installed OpenFOAM-1.5 32 bits to check your problem.

tar ztvf ~/Desktop/OpenFOAM-1.5.linuxGccDPOpt.gtgz | grep icoFoam
-rwxr-x--- henry/messagebus 433964 2008-07-10 15:46 OpenFOAM-1.5/applications/bin/linuxGccDPOpt/icoFoam

The icoFoam binary is present in the binary package.

foamInstallationTest runs without errors and i've tested icoFoam tutorials, work fine.

You probably don't have sourced correctly your OpenFOAM environment.

I found that several of the directories had the wrong permissions after extracting the OF 1.5 distribution file. This lead to executables not being found on my cluster.

It took some patience to resolve but its not hard.

Summary:
=======

It was all my mistake. Sorry. And, Thanks!

Details:
=======

(1) I had downloaded the v1.5 distro in early August 2008, and had checked its md5 values (on Windows) then, and that's how I knew that the MD5 values were right. But then, I forgot precisely where I stored the distro on my huge backup/installables disk. Further, also to be on the safer side, I downloaded the entire distro once again recently in mid-September, 2008. I used the Free Download Manager (FDM) utility both times, and didn't check MD5 values the second time round.

I used the 2nd download for installation. Since it was an FDM-downloaded file, the binary file size was, of course, right to begin with (FDM allocates the entire required disk-space right at the beginning). However, some errors must have crept in during the second download---may be the electricity went off at the cybercafe (a frequent occurrance in Pune, India) near the end of the download, or may be something else. I don't know.

In any case, Ark could open it---the second download. So, I never did suspect anything wrong with it. But no, though I assumed so, the MD5 value of the second download was not, in fact, right.

Last night, finally, I could locate my first download---of the correct MD5 checksum---and used *it* to install OpenFOAM-1.5 successfully.

(2) I could also get the "paraFoam" command (script) to work.

Here, the Readme.html should ask us to first compile the PV3FoamReader module and only then to try to run the "paraFoam" command.

In short, the contents of point nos. 6 and 7 should be interchanged so that they are in the right sequence.

(3) BTW, I knew the issue wouldn't have been different file systems. After all, both Linux and Windows are meant to run on the same Intel i.e. little Endian architecture. Further, in any case, the MD5 signatures are very highly binary-sensitive. Also, being binary, the usual CRLF issues wouldn't come up here.

I think the suggestion about file permissions was pretty fine and something that I would had completely missed in my investigation. However, as I said, file permissions did not turn out to be the root cause here. The root cause was: my clumsiness, plus the only mechanics for downloading software that is available to a low-income engineer like me in Pune, India.

Anyway, thanks a bunch to all those who replied. It did make me feel a bit welcome in this forum. And, I promise, I will try not to be so stupid the next time round.

Are you sure you have followed the README,eapecially the following part?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) EITHER, if running bash or ksh (if in doubt type 'echo $SHELL'), source the
etc/bashrc file by adding the following line to the end of your
$HOME/.bashrc file:

+ . $HOME/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-<version>/etc/bashrc

Then update the environment variables by sourcing the $HOME/.bashrc file by
typing in the terminal:

+ . $HOME/.bashrc

2) OR, if running tcsh or csh, source the etc/cshrc file by adding the
following line to the end of your $HOME/.cshrc file:

+ source $HOME/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-<version>/etc/cshrc

Then update the environment variables by sourcing the $HOME/.cshrc file by
typing in the terminal:

+ source $HOME/.cshrc

Hello, Hua Zen
We are sure that had doing source indicated in readme file.
At first we believed that didn't sourcing correctly, because no get answering in the terminal (load gcc, java, paraview like OpenFOAM-1.4.1). Is this correct?
We observe another difference with OF-1.4.1, our bashrc file in /OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-1.5/etc isn't a script file but a text file. We changed properties to do execute file. Is it right?
We appreciate you answer.
Thanks

Neither is correct in my opinion.
OF 1.5 do not print any information.
You do not need to change it to be executable.

Still I think it is related to your sourcing.Because it can not find "wmake" command.

We check again our sourcing and noticed one stupid error!!, we copied wrong the last line in .bashrc file. Correct it and Allwmake is working fine.
We will revised another messages errors that give Allwmake.

Sorry for waste your time.

Dear Hua Zen
We are repeated one question in other post, because nobody answered us in there.

We followed the instructions for installation OF1.5, in SUSE10.3 for 32 bit indicated in:

http://www.cfd-online.com/OpenFOAM_D...tml?1227184516

We install all packages (GCC, Cmake, mpfr, gmp) also we done the symbolic link for library python, as root.
When execute ./Allwmake followed message error we obtained:

make[1]: Debido a los errores, el objetivo `application' no se reconstruyó.
make[1]: se sale del directorio `/home/foam5/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-1.5/applications/utilities/postProcessing'
make: *** [postProcessing] Error 2
make: Debido a los errores, el objetivo `application' no se reconstruyó.
+ '[' '' = doc ']'

We think this error could corrected with build paraview.
So we followed the instructions of readme file about, compiling Paraview3.3 and PV3FoamReader module, when execute buildParaView3.3-cvs we get this message error:
.......
[ 14%] Building CXX object VTK/Graphics/CMakeFiles/vtkGraphics.dir/vtkGraphLayoutFilter.o

Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate.
See <http://gcc.gnu.org/bugs.html> for instructions.

make[1]: *** [VTK/Graphics/CMakeFiles/vtkGraphics.dir/all] Error 2

done

So, if you've got an idea about this error, pleased help us. Are missing another packages install for?

But perhaps I know one reason that you do not get any answer. For the discussion board,it's better to pose everything in English, including the error message.

Hello Sonia and Ana,

/home/foam5/OpenFOAM/ThirdParty/ParaView3.3-cvs/VTK/Graphics/vtkGridSynchronized Templates3D.cxx:736: internal compiler error: Violación de segmento

This is a "Segmentation violation" error message while compiling the file vtkGridSynchronizedTemplates3D.C

Make sure you are using the right version of g++ for compiling ParaView.

Hello Martin
Thank for your reply
We haven't available any g++ for install in software management by Yast
we revised our system and version gcc installed is 4.2.1, but we had seen in other discussions, that necessary version for gcc is 4.3.1 or later.
We search in repositories pages for suse-10.3 and only found the most recent version 4.2.1.
We had seen gcc-c++ (version 4.2-24) installed in our system, is this package the same?
We needed work with OF-1.5 in suse10.3 because we had OF-1.4 working fine.
Is possible resolve our problem without changed to suse-11?
Thank for your advice.

FoamX is no longer developed or supported by OpenCFD and is not included in the 1.5 release or subsequent releases. The 1.5 documentation describes how to use OpenFOAM without FoamX and most users find this preferable.
