Hi,

I'm relatively new to Salome. I have been playing with the package and have learnt the basics of Shaper, Geometry and Mes.

I want to work out how to import a .step assembly into Shaper, add some additional geometry, create groups in Geometry module and them mesh the assembly with sub-meshes for each part. I have each operation worked out however when i try and generate the mesh from a file imported via shaper i get an error. The Warning message stops me selecting a geomerty to mesh.

Warning: Geometry object is not a sub-shape of the shape to mesh

If I import a .step assembly directly into Geometry module, partition it to 2 solids, I can create groups of faces before meshing the 2 components.

I find that if I import the same .step assembly into Shaper, then export to geometry (Features > Export to Geom), then partition it I don't get 2 solids (as I did when importing directly to Geometry module).

If I Explode the geometry imported from Shaper I can get 2 solids (explode > to solid). However, if I then create groups and try and mesh I get the below

Warning: Geometry object is not a sub-shape of the shape to mesh.

Can some one please explain what the difference is in solids created by a .step assembly imported directly into Geometry and one imported via Shaper? And then how I can solve my issue?

I have some of this figured out.

When I create the initial mesh, the geometry selected needs the compound geometry (.i.e the geometry entity containing all the geometry pieces you wish to sub-mesh).

Then sub-meshes of the individual solid geometries can be created, as they are children of the compound geometry.

I still don't understand why Salome behaves differently if the geometry is imported directly into the Geometry module, or imported to Shaper and then exported to the Geometry module.
