Can anybody recommend a simple CFD code which can be used for teaching basic CFD?

The features should cover laminar and turbulent flow (k-eps sufficient), stationary and transient problems and if possible heat transfer as well. The code should include a GUI to enter ic's, bc's, material properties and parameters for the numerical schemes. A postprocessor to plot velocity vectors, isolines etc. and to extract mass flow data, forces etc. should also be available.

Source code is not necessary, an executable for WinXP will do. The code is intended for teaching only, not for real "production".

I understand CHAM does a good deal - using PHOENICS for academic use. You might like to speak to them too.

download starCCM+ free version, it has everything you need, but it will not support cases with more than 16000 cells, but i guess teaching work can be done within it.

It is nice to know about a new CFD tool, and this one is coming from South Africa. I definitly will have a look at it. I have downloaded the files but I am still waiting for the PassWord in order to unlock it, I just went through the help system and it seems to be using commands similar to the Old StarCD, vset,etc.. The CFD market seems to be expanding with new competitors, the other day I found a Russian Product FlowVision(www.flowvision.ru) one of these days we will see FLUENT posting its Evaluation Copy with 50000 nodes

FLUENT has launched a $99 15000 cell limit version of its FLUENT 6.2 solver, check their site for details. CFD is a tough subject, but if you practice with a first class programme, participants in your courses will have additional motivations, just from the pedagogical point of view. I might be wrong.

A student at a university should be able to use OpenFOAM for learning CFD.

Is a point o view-I think you are right.at the level of general knowledge/principles and learning the basics. But think about what Adam Smith said: " division of work and cooperation of specialised people and commerce is the key of the wealth of nations" The pilots do not know in detail what is happening inside the airplane or in the jet engine and nobody care to know what is happening in the entrails of a computer.May be this is the trend.
