Question about Initialization of Signed Distance Function (LEVEL SET)

Hello, everyone!

I have been digging into LEVEL SET for a long time, and my research focus on the simulation of multi-phase fluids.
Anyway, the initialization of the signed distance function keeps being a puzzle to me, and I feel helpless when the initial boundary comes to a complex curve(surface), e.g. the curve in the following attachment (a star).
I was wondering whether you guys could give a headup, or recommend some papers about this topic.
