Please can somebody suggest a free accessible code for visualization of calculations on unstructured grids (I use 2-D triangular cells and finite element method).

VTK is a great C++ library for visualisation:

There is also a frontend available for VTK:

Try vigie or mayavi. Do a google search for both. Vigie is particularly simple to use.
