characteristics-shock waves

is it possible to use the method of characteristics to capture a shock.could someone tell me how?
how will the characteristics look like on either side of the shock.Could my equations change from hyperbolic to eliptic across the shock? i would appreciate it if someone could clarify the above pts. |
