Because non-linear stability analysis results in non-linear equations that can only be approximately solved, it at all.

Nonlinear stability analysis of nonlinear pde's discretized by finite difference methods is a difficult exercise in dynamical systems theory. A.C. Newell (of soliton fame) has some pretty old work published on this topic.
