Hi,
Has anyone tested the FDS simulation program from NIST http://fire.nist.gov/fds. If so, how well does the simulation compare to experiment or other simulation. I know some that some consultancy companies are going to recommened the use of FDS as a general CFD simulation tool for fire simulation. And I am a bit worried about this way ! Many commercial CFD programs like CFX, Fluent have been used a lot for fire simulation and validated. Thanks in advance. Kind Regards Jens |

We have been using FDS for more that two years now.
Before using it for tunnel fires we have validated it. The validation of the software has been carried out using the Memorial Tunnel Fire Ventilation Test Program (MTFVTP) Test Case 321 A - a 40 MW fire with a single point supply in the ceiling as the ventilation system. The paper demonstrates that the FDS2 code predicts well the measured data, is suitable for predicting fires in road tunnels and can, just like other state-of-the-art codes, provide valuable information. If you want I can send you the paper which has appeared in the journal Tunnel Management International last December. Steve |
