Good CFD Books, FAQ

The most frequent question posted here must be people asking for advice about CFD related books. I think that it is time to put this in some sort of FAQ or so. I know that there is a "CFD books list" on the net, but it is a bit outdated by now and I don't think that is is maintained regularly either.
There has been quite a few answers here about books and I'll try to dig out the most important parts and put it together. However, I could use some help. If you want to recommend a good CFD book please send me a description of it including title, author and ISBN number. The books can of course also be about topics related to CFD (like Turbulence, specific application areas etc). Thanks in advance. |

Good idea Jonas. Books are awesome creatures.... my fav is Ferziger and Peric's, 'Computational Methods for Fluid Dynamics'...its pretty amazing how much understandable info they packed into 364 pages. I have also found J.D. Anderson's books on CFD to be indispensible as well. And also in the CFD category, I believe that Mr. Patankar's classic on Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow is an essential reference. Another really great book I like, though its not specifically CFD, is Frank M. White's classic, 'Viscous Fluid Flows'. And my final nominee in the flow category would have to be Pope's, 'Low (and High)- Speed Wind Tunnel Testing'. These are just a few though, and as we all know there are many great technical, but still literary, works of men and women in this field that make concepts such as discretization, or even "wiggle" study (if you haven't already, check out: P.M. Gresho & R.L. Lee's, 'Don't Suppress the Wiggles, They're Telling You Something', published 1979 in Finite Element Methods for Convection Dominated Flows'), or even boundary layer investigation exciting, rewarding and satisfying. Yes friends, books AND journal articles are good things.

Hi, a good book for CFD using spectral methods is: Canuto, C., Hussaini, M.Y., Quarteroni, A., and Zang, T.A., "Spectral Methods in Fluid Dynamics", Springer-Verlag, 1988. And I've got 2 isbn here: ISBN 3-540-17371-4 ISBN 0-387-17371-4

Dear All:
The Ferziger and Peric Book, Computational Methods for Fluid Dynamics, is a very good book. I gives a good overview of CFD, and points out current trends in CFD like LES and DNS. It also comes with a variety of free CFD codes (via ftp). It may not mean much, but I recommend this book. Tony |

Maintaining a list of good texts and reference material is an excellent idea. I hope everyone will contribute to the list so that it will become an up to date and dynamic list. Below are some of my favorites.
Osman S. Borekci Title : Computational Methods for Fluid Dynamics Author(s): J.H. Ferziger and M. Peric Publisher : Springer Year : 1996 ISBN : 3-540-59434-5 Title : An Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics, The Finite Volume Method Author(s):H.K. Versteeg and W. Malalasekera Publisher : Longman Year : 1995 (Reprints 1996,1998) ISBN : 0-582-21884-5 (An excellent introductory text with a good balance of theory and application. Material is presented in an "almost ready to code form". Structured meshes are used throughout. Organization and presentaion is very good.) Title : Numerical Computation of Internal and External Flows, Vol. 1 Fundamentals of Numerical Discretization Author(s): C. Hirsch Publisher : Wiley-Interscience Year : 1988 (Reprints 1989, 1991, 1992) ISBN : 0-471-91762-1 (hbk) 0-471-92385-0 (pbk) Title : Numerical Computation of Internal and External Flows, Vol. 2 Computational Methods for Inviscid and Viscous Flows Author(s): C. Hirsch Publisher : Wiley-Interscience Year : 1988 (Reprints 1989, 1991, 1992) ISBN : 0-471-92351-6 (hbk) 0-471-92452-0 (pbk) Title : Computational Fluid Dynamics Author(s): M.B. Abbot and D.R. Basco Publisher : Longman Year : 1989 (Reprints 1990, 1994, 1995) ISBN : 0-582-01365-8 Title : Numerical Modeling of Ocean Dynamics Author(s): Z. Kowalik and T.S. Murty Publisher : World Scientific Year : 1993 (Reprint 1995) ISBN : 981-02-1333-6 (hbk) 981-1334-4 (pbk) (A good graduate level text for those interested in modeling oceanic flows. Introduces the application of finite difference methods. Focuses on transport equations, shallow water phenomena (tides, storm surges, tsunamis), 3-D unsteady flows, natural oscillations and steady state flows.) Title : Momentum Transfer In Boundary Layers Author(s): T. Cebeci and P. Bradshaw Publisher : Hemisphere Publishing Corporation Year : 1977 ISBN : 0-07-010300-3 (Provides a good starting point for those interested in modeling boundary layer flows. Laminar and turbulent boundary layers are covered. Equations and solution tools are presented. Fortran source code is given for most of the methods.) |

There is a new (1998) version of the book by P.J. Roache: "Fundamentals of CFD" (Hermosa Publishers): the old book revised, and much new material.

Oops! I pressed the send button too quickly. You should also include Roache's new (1998) "Verification and Validation in Computational Science and Engineering".
