how to analyze the dissipation and dispersion errors generated by temporal discretisation?

If von Neumann analysis is used, for multistep schemes, finally a polynomial is obtained. There are one or more roots of such polynomial. Then how to analyze the dissipation and dispersion errors?

Thank you.

Look for papers by Tam et. al on dispersion relation preserving schemes. He has given a detailed analysis on the analysis of temporal discretization errors. Also Hirsch has a section on the same topic in vol. 1
