What is the better (appropriate) solver for poisson equ. with periodic boundary conditions in one direction ?

If you use FFTs in the periodic direction, you would end up with a set of Helmholtz equations which can be solved independently. Except for the FFTs and inverse FFTs, the method should parallelize (or vectorize) very well.
